Wild Karakachan Horses in Kostilkovo

The Karakachan wild horses in Kostilkovo village are the true living legacies of Rhodope history. They are native to the Rhodope mountains and seem to possess a special charm that attracts more and more visitors. The horses were brought in Ivaylovgrad area by the New Thracian gold project with the main purpose to naturally graze the land and keep the landscape half-open. Living among the mild hills and deciduous forests of the Rhodope mountains, these sturdy and independent horses have survived for centuries and can still be enjoyed today. Visitors in 4WD vehicles or biking visitors are able to watch the horses by driving along the dirt side roads near Kostilkovo village. However, it is important to note that feeding or getting closer than 50 m to a wild horse is forbidden. It is advisable to hire a local guide to show you around. Ask about it at the reception desk of the hotel Luxor.
